Post Tim .... Vehicle Security Module ...
Well, as you suspected, my mystery door lock issue in my superduty has progressed and is showing all the symptoms of a bad Vehicle Security Module (VSM). Door locks crazily locking and unlocking by themselves, door ajar light staying on, radio staying on with key out and doors open .....

So, what do you know about these VSM's?? From what I understand they have to be programed by a Ford tech ....

Thanks

It may just be a bad door adjar switch. Have to see if you have one or more sticking and go from there.

I've tried that. So, more of the story ...

As you know, I've had the intermittent problem with the doors not locking with the door switch. As of about two weeks ago, they started working normally. Last night, I went to take the truck to Touchet. When I unlocked the door with the key, as soon as I opened the door, it immediately relocked. Unlocked the door again, they relocked by themselves. Hmm ... that was weird. Tried to start the truck, cranked slow and no start. Tried to start several more times, cranking got slower. Guages all started swinging all the way to the right, then back to normal and a relay or something in the dash was clicking very fast. Put the battery charger on the the truck. While charging, I unlocked and opened the drivers door. All the doors started locking and unlocking by themselves really fast, until I assume they popped the fuse, because now they do not work at all. Finished charging BOTH batteries. Truck cranked great and started like normal. ABS light stayed on for about 2 minutes. Drove around the block a few times, let it idle for a while to make sure it was charging. Everything seemed normal except the door ajar light. Opened and closed all the doors. Overhead light worked normal with opening and closing the doors, but door ajar light stayed on. Shut the truck off, pulled the key, opened the door and the radio stayed on. Monkeyed with the doors more, but radio still would not shut off. The timed auto shutoff on the dome like was working normal, but the radio would not go off. So ... I may have dead batteries again ..... Here is what led me to my conclusion ....

It is highly possible that the vsm has gone south. Still need to hook up to it with a scan tool and see if the door adjar switches are sticking and see if the vsm has any dtc's in it. You coming over to work on the truck tonight? If so I can take a look.

Because of the cold?

No, just because I'm not entirely sure what this VSM is going to try and shut down. When I first started cranking on it last night, it acted like it shut the fuel off ... but, it could have been that is just wasn't cranking fast enough (building enough oil pressure) to fire the injectors .... I'm not sure. I hate mystery electrical junk.

Most likely it's caused by the batteries being low-dead. Without enough juice from the batteries on top of being cold and needing the glow plugs to work it will be difficult to start without charging the batteries first.
